The origin of the name

It is derived from the two Byzantine generals, Kattaro and Zaro, while a different theory says that Zaro was the original name of the river (Zarapotamo). So katà Zaro would mean "Beyond the river".  The name could also be derived from the Greek words kata'- antheros which means "On the flowery hills".
